• One Tree, One Waterhole, One Generation at a Time

    Restoring Kenya’s Savanna

We’re MMTC, a community-powered conservation movement bringing life back to the land through native trees, clean water, and youth climate education.

Who we are

The Maanzoni Million Tree Challenge (MMTC) is a registered Kenyan NGO on a mission to restore the savanna ecosystem in Maanzoni and beyond.

We work at the grassroots—planting native trees, building waterholes for wildlife, teaching environmental education in schools, and removing invasive species that choke biodiversity.

Our vision? A thriving savanna where people, wildlife, and trees can flourish together.

What We Do on the Ground

Native Tree Planting

We plant and protect native tree species across unfenced savanna plots, using research-backed methods and community labour. Each tree is caged, watered, and monitored for a full year—ensuring a 90%+ survival rate.

Water Access for Wildlife

Our waterhole project brings permanent, wildlife-safe water sources to dry zones—supporting animal movement, tree growth, and ecosystem balance. Our first 44,000-litre pilot was completed in 2025.

Climate Education & Eco Clubs

We’re growing a generation of conservation leaders through Eco Clubs and our “Savanna Snacks” school book series. Young minds learn to protect the land—and shape a more sustainable future.

Explore Our Work

Behind every planted tree is a story of renewal, resilience, and hope — for people, wildlife, and the planet.

Why It Matters

Kenya’s savannas are more than open spaces — they are living, breathing ecosystems that support endangered species, store carbon, and sustain pastoral communities. But decades of drought, overgrazing, and fencing have disrupted the delicate balance.

That’s why MMTC is restoring these landscapes — one tree, shrub, and grass at a time.

We plant native species to bring back biodiversity, reconnect wildlife corridors, and recharge water tables. More than that, we’re nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards who will care for these spaces long into the future.

Every tree is a promise — of renewal, of resilience, and of a greener tomorrow.

From Age 7 to 96: Planting Trees Across Generations

In one unforgettable day, travellers aged 7 to 96 joined hands to plant trees in Maanzoni — proving that conservation has no age limit. Organised by leading tour companies committed to eco-tourism and impact.

    Tracking Wildlife, Protecting the Future

Join us on a powerful day of conservation in action as MMTC teams up with Athi Kapiti Wildlife Conservancy and Nature Kenya for a wildlife game count. Together, we track savanna species, assess ecosystem health, and strengthen data for long-term habitat protection.
